In the early 80’s the small subculture gothic scene began to grow quickly. Those who took a genuine interest in the gothic culture tried to emulate the look, style, and feel of the gothic arts. Sculptures, literature and gothic paintings all became more popular with gothic culture. Religion has played a large role in the areas of gothic culture. Whether it is religious belief, satire or for the look that some religious accessories and pieces give off, many in gothic culture participate in this religious style for their practice in gothic culture.

In essence, gothic culture is a lifestyle that those who participate in live everyday. The style of dress, accessories, and sometimes, attitude of the gothic culture make it is to spot someone who lives the gothic culture lifestyle.

The gothic culture originated in the high middle ages when European art and architecture displayed the narrative story through pictures and artwork. The styles were secular and natural and later evolved into Renaissance art.

Today, those who participate in the gothic culture may have some knowledge of the history of gothic art to a certain degree. However, there gothic culture is mainly a subculture that is derived from the history of Goths.

These days, there are no direct rules in being interested or involved with gothic culture. While there are some truths to the “look” of gothic culture, these may not apply to all individuals who have taken an interest in gothic culture.

For example, those who live the lifestyle of gothic culture usually wear dark clothing that is designed in a way that reflects the attire worn in dark medieval times. Rich fabrics and layers usually stand out in a normal crowd of people, making it easy enough to pick out a fellow person from the gothic culture.

Often times, white makeup and dark eye and lip makeup can be considered the trademark look of the gothic culture. Music can also be considered to be a large part of gothic culture as well.
